Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and age-old forests, Les Landes offers visitors a chance to explore. To help you plan your stay in one of the most beautiful parts of France, our team has selected the loveliest spots in the South-West for you. Whether you’re a lover of the great outdoors, a history buff or a foodie, enjoy discovering the many cultural and natural riches of Les Landes.
LES LANDES, NATURAL WONDERS
With 106 km of beaches, crystal-clear lakes and the largest pine forest in Europe, Les Landes offers both exploration and contemplation. The department is a little corner of paradise for lovers of the great outdoors and is full of natural wonders. Time seems to stand still in this colourful environment.
Away from the noise of the city, you have the opportunity to reconnect with nature. On foot or by bike, you can immerse yourself in the heart of the Landes forest. More than 1,000 km of trails allow you to discover its exceptional biodiversity. To find out more about this area, you can visit the Marquèze ecomuseum (in Sabres), Graine de forêt (in Garein) or the Musée des Forges (Brocas).
The Cazaux-Sanguinet and Biscarrosse-Parentis lakes are an unmissable feature of the region. Havens of peace edged by fine sandy beaches where you can go kayaking, sailing, paddleboarding or waterskiing.
Les Landes has plenty to offer for photographers. You can observe the local wildlife all over the region. Children and adults alike will marvel at this natural heritage on a visit to the Marais d’Orx, the Arjuzanx, the Courant de Huchet, Étangs Noir et Blanc de Seignosse or the Barthes de l’Adour nature reserves.
Good to know: every Thursday, guided walk to discover the wildlife of the Cap de l’Homy dune.
A UNIQUE CULTURAL HERITAGE
The discovery of the “Lady with the Hood”, the oldest representation of a human face (25,000 years BC), shows the exceptional historical and cultural wealth of Les Landes. The peoples who occupied these lands over the centuries have left their mark.
Discover the cultural heritage of Les Landes while you’re on holiday in Lit-et-Mixe. Amongst the must-see places is the Musée des Landes d’Antan and the Fontaine de Yons in the village of Lit-et-Mixe. In Contis, the lighthouse will amaze you.
The gastronomic reputation of Les Landes extends beyond the borders of France. To experience some of the expertise, we advise you to visit the Pavillon du Foie Gras Labeyrie in Capbreton.
In July and August, you’ll want to try the local specialities sold at the Lit-et-Mixe farmers’ market.
In Dax, you must see the Roman archaeological crypt, Notre-Dame Sainte-Marie Cathedral and the Fontaine Chaude – all treasures to be enjoyed on a cultural holiday in South-West France.
Did you know? Legends abound in the Landes region. Many texts tell of miraculous stories connected to the fountains. In the Landes, there are no less than 200 so-called “miraculous” fountains and springs. Myth or reality, you be the judge!
